Apollo intravehicular Pressure
Garment Assembly, which formed the basis of the Extravehicular Mobility
Unit. This suit was worn during dangerous parts of the mission, such
as launch, dockings, and lunar landing and liftoff, to protect the crewmen
from rapid depressurization from a hull puncture. It was also designed
to be highly fire proof after the Apollo 1 fire which killed astronauts
Grissom, White and Chaffee.
